First Nations Women In Tourism Australia

Empowering women through tourism, culture and leadership.

Welcome!

First Nations Women In Tourism Australia (FNWITA) is a leadership project that inspires, supports and empowers First Nations Women in Tourism.

Through our not-for-profit organisation, we support community development by encouraging and inspiring our women to continue to nurture culture for the next generations of Indigenous people.

We provide First Nations women with the skills and tools to enter the tourism industry, building capabilities and empowering our women to become leaders.

How we help

We focus on three key areas to make an impact.

If you want to support our First Nations Women in Australia, show your commitment by supporting us financially on our next tourism project.

Have an idea or project that you would like us to be involved in? We are happy to collaborate and would love to discuss how we can help each other.

If you are a First Nations Women in Tourism and are interested in joining us, contact us for a yarn about becoming a member.

Who are we?

We are educators and story-tellers, who can help bridge the gap between indigenous and non-indigenous people in Australia, connecting people with the land and the sea through tourism. We want to create an inclusive environment that celebrates the diversity of Australia's culture, using story telling and truth telling to provide understanding and a way to move forward together.

We believe that tourism can be a powerful platform for story telling; for education of our culture and traditional practices and connecting people to the land, for truth telling and healing, all whilst providing the tourism industry with authentic indigenous immersions”.

About Tourism

The Tourism Industry is here for good.

It is one of the largest industries in the world. Regardless of what natural disasters happen, what health impacts occur in the world, politics and war - it will bounce back so long as people are allowed to travel our planet earth.

It produces for 1 in 3 jobs globally in tourism and hospitality sectors. The Tourism Industry creates so much wealth in the world. Yet it often exists in a bubble. There are many communities that surround it that are still living in poverty, who don’t benefit at all from the Tourism Industry, or even meet tourists.

Women make up a larger part of the workforce than men in the Tourism and Hospitality Industries globally, however there are less women in executive and leadership roles, and those that are, are often underpaid.

We need change.

We need to have a more sustainable tourism industry, that manages tourism better and doesn’t overcrowd, one that benefits communities in a positive way empowering more women in to leadership positions.

It starts on the ground, looking at what the opportunities are in communities. It includes educating people - from teaching about the tourism industry as a whole, providing First Nations women the skills to run their own tourism businesses.

The aim is more cultural awareness throughout the industry, to provide a better understanding of Indigenous culture, and providing a safe space for First Nations people to enter the Tourism Industry and work together.
